Life Lessons To Help Your Kid Settle Into College

Your kid is heading off to college, which inherently means they are going to be hit by a kaleidoscope of new experiences and it is going to be overwhelming. Not just for them either; it is going to be overwhelming for you too. Your baby is leaving the nest, spreading their wings and learning how to fly. It isn’t going to be easy, but the thing you need to remember is that you can’t wrap them in bubble wrap or hold their hand. Nope. The only thing you can do is prepare them as best as possible and that means playing Professor Life Lessons.

To help you with this, we have pulled together a list of things your college-bound kiddo needs to learn before that first class begins. Enjoy the ride.

1. Basic Cooking 101
You don’t need to teach them how to make a Beef Wellington or Coq Au Vin or anything even remotely complex; you just need to teach them how to cook something, preferably something healthy. Omelettes, spag bol, carbonara, delicious salads. Anything that will break up their strict diet of bulletproof coffee and pizza. Even if it is just a little bit.

2. Money Management
College. Is. Not. Cheap. That’s a fact. There are bills to pay, books to buy, groceries to remember, cleaning products, rent, drinks, transport and just about everything else that falls under the bell curve of life. So while getting a job is a good start, it will only work for them if you can teach them how to be a little more money-savvy. You could even help them create a budget.

3. Laundry Lessons
Of all life’s pitfalls, hurdles and mind-boggling conundrums, it is doing laundry that will confuse your kids the most. For their entire life, laundry has remained a mystery. They put their dirty clothes in the magic basket and the next day they appear in their wardrobe. Teach them the truth. And teach them to always separate whites and colours.

4. Staying Safe
You want your kids to squeeze the most out of college and have fun, but you also want them to be safe. That means doing the responsible thing of teaching them how about sexual health awareness and the importance of drinking responsibly and putting the number for the campus police into their speed dial and teaching them how to use their pepper spray and whatever else you deem to be necessary. Remember: safety first and then fun.

5. De-stressing Techniques
Yeah, college is going to be the best time of their life. Period. But for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction and, in this case, that means stress. Exams are stressful. Living away from home for the first time is stressful. Meeting deadlines is stressful. Realising that this time in their lives could shape their entire future is stressful. So teach them how to effectively manage stress with things like exercise, diet and long baths.

6. Answer The Phone
When they become a parent in later life and go through this themselves, that’s when they will get it. You’re calling because you are worried. It is a pretty normal thing for a parent to do. You just want to know they are all good. So teach them the importance of picking up the phone or texting back. Always.
