Steal The Show At Your Next Fancy Dress Party

When it comes to parties and special occasions, many of us plan our outfits way in advance. Living life as a busy working parent, you may not always have the time to go out and socialize as much as you would like to, so the occasional party can help you to burn off a bit of steam. From the second the invitation lands in your inbox (or on your doormat, if the host is going old-school!), you may find yourself already mentally going through your closet deciding what to wear. There is one occasion where you can’t quite do this though, and that is if you have been invited to a fancy dress party. There are typically two types of reaction that people have when they find out that the party has a fancy dress theme; sheer excitement, or dread and internal groaning! But whatever side of the fence you sit on, chances are you want to at least look the best you can with the theme you’ve been given. Sure, it can take a little more effort than just getting ready for a regular party, but it will be a night to remember (just make sure you get some good photos to look back on!). Here are a few ideas that can help you nail fancy dress at your next party.

Think outside the box
Like with anything else, there are some obvious themes when it comes to dressing up. If the event is Halloween-related, you’re likely to see lots of witches, ghosts and zombies at the party you attend. If the theme is just ‘fancy dress’ in general, you’ll probably still end up with a few classic choices, such as sailors, Bond, or the Pink Ladies from Grease. If you’re bored of the same old same old and want to try something different, push the boat out with your next fancy dress costume. Why not learn how to do some amazing optical illusion makeup, or opt for the humor tactic by going as an unpopular politician?

Have the right tools at hand
If you’re feeling particularly dedicated to your costume, experimenting with some fx makeup can help to bring your look to life. It can be time-consuming, and you’ll want to give it a trial run first just to check you know what you’re doing. But thankfully, there are plenty of YouTube channels that run through the tutorials with you so that you can create your look step by step.

Get a group together
Having trouble thinking of an individual outfit that sparks your imagination? Sometimes, getting multiple people together for a group costume can be more fun than doing it on your own. Bring some ideas together to pitch to your friends to see if they would be game for any of them. Some classic options include Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Minions from Despicable Me. Or, you could opt for something a little more obscure, such as Crayola crayons (yep, the costumes do exist!), or even fruits and vegetables! Remember, fancy dress is all about having a laugh, so let your imagination run wild.
