Prolonging The Life of Your Carpet

Not only are carpets expensive, but they’re also difficult to replace. You have to move all of the furniture out of the rooms for them to be fitted, and it’s generally a huge ordeal. So once you’ve had them done, chances are you’ll be wanting to keep them in the best condition possible. That way you don’t have to go through the effort and expense again anytime soon! Here are a few ways you can help to prolong the life of your carpet.

Remove Shoes
Allowing shoes on the carpet will trudge in any dirt from the pavement outside. This will cause it to look dirty, as well as being incredibly unhygienic. Think about the bacteria that could be lurking on the bottom of your shoes, the things you could have stepped in outside! So don't come home and tread that all over you nice new carpets.

Use Large Rugs
Using large rugs in high traffic areas will help to protect the carpet from general wear and tear. It’s much easier to replace a rug than it is to replace the whole carpet and so this is something well worth considering. You might feel it’s a shame to cover a new carpet with a rug. But when you have children and pets it’s better to be safe than sorry and keep it protected as best as possible.

Treat Any Spills Properly
Avoid consuming food and drink on the carpet- particularly things that can stain such as wine, berries, and curry. If you have a carpeted dining room, having a large rug put underneath can help to catch any mishaps and protect your carpet. If you do happen to experience any spills, it’s important to treat them properly. Don't just throw down water or soap and start scrubbing as you may well make it worse. Quickly Google the specific stain and follow the instructions for removing it. Having some carpet cleaning products on hand ready to go can be useful. Always test them out on an inconspicuous area before applying them to a stain, as some carpets might discolor if the wrong products are used.

Use a Carpet Cleaner Once a Year
A thorough carpet cleaning at least once a year will help to keep on top of things. You could hire a Rug Doctor or buy a carpet cleaner and do this yourself. It helps to remove any ingrained dirt as well as kill any accumulated bacteria that’s built up. When you have children who like to sit and play on the floor, it’s important to make sure the carpet is kept clean. Different carpet pile heights and types will require different care, so research this properly before jumping in. Alternatively you could pay a professional carpet cleaning company as they’ll know the best ways to go about it.

Draw The Curtains on Sunny Days
Sunlight can cause colored carpets to fade. Depending on which way your house faces, one side will be flooded with light during the day. To prevent this from fading the carpet, pull over a curtain or draw the blind during the sunniest hours of the day. Or remember to leave them at least partially drawn when you leave for work in the morning.
