Small Ways to Live More Healthily

I'm always looking for small ways to make my family healthier. It can be hard to live a healthy lifestyle when you're busy. Eating fast food and driving everywhere is so much easier when you're short on time! But I want to set good examples for my kids, so I try to find out how I can fit being healthy into our daily lives. There are lots of little things that you can do to be healthier without a lot of effort. You can make your meals and snacks better, and it won't take much time. And you only need a few minutes each day to do more exercise.

Make Healthy Snacks

A lot of people don't find it too hard to make healthy meals. You can find lots of quick recipes to make food that's good for you. But eating healthy snacks can be a lot harder. All the easily bought snacks in the stores are usually not good for you. Chips, pretzels, cookies and all kinds of other things have a lot of sugar, salt, and empty calories. It's a bit easier to buy things like prepared fruit, but they don't put it in prominent places in the store like the unhealthy stuff. I find the best way to make sure the kids (and adults) get healthy snacks is by making them at home. You can do anything from cutting up some fruit to making popcorn or your own cereal bars.

Drink More Water

Drinking too many sugary drinks can lead to obesity, as well as damaging teeth. But a lot of people can't help having them all the time. If you have a soda addiction, or maybe one to juice, you should try to wean yourself off it. We drink plenty of water in our house, and everyone likes it. You can make it taste better using a filter, so there's no need to buy bottled water. You can have a look at one on If you don't like the taste or water or think it's boring, there are healthy ways to flavor it. Try squeezing in some lemon juice or other fruit juice to make it tastier.

Walk a Bit More

Finding the time to exercise can be difficult. On the weekdays, we can be much too tired to do anything too physical. We try to get out and about at the weekend to do some exercise as a family. One of the ways you can fit some more into your day is by walking sometimes. You don't have to start suddenly walking everywhere. But you can take the stairs instead of the elevator or park your car five minutes' from your destination.

Talk About Things

Being healthy isn't just about your body. It's important to look after your mind and your emotions too. Talking about your feelings as a family can help everyone to deal with their problems. It's especially important to encourage boys to open up about their thoughts and feelings. Otherwise, it can be tough for them to do so when they're older.

It doesn't take much to make your family healthier. A few small changes can make a big difference.
